IIT Jodhpur launches two new 4-year B.S. Programs to make students future ready

To cater for the growing need and demand for modern technologies, the Indian Institute of Technology Jodhpur will launch a new engineering-linked four-year B.S. programs in Chemistry and Physics with specialization.

The Institute has designed the new programs aligned with global needs. The programs will impart fundamental knowledge in basic science and engineering in the first year. In the second and third years, the students will undergo comprehensive theoretical and experimental courses in advanced concepts of Chemistry and Physics in the respective programs, and in the final year, these programs will enable the students to specialize in a focused area in the forefront of science.

Highlighting the unique aspects of the new 4-year B.S. programs, Prof. Santanu Chaudhury, Director, IIT Jodhpur, said, “Research in Basic sciences is driving the frontier of technology. Quantum technology, Sustainable materials, Terahertz technology, Gene Therapy, and Green Energy are some examples of science driving technology innovations. It’s time to rethink the basic science programmes, making them foundational for emerging technologies. New BS programmes of IIT Jodhpur have been launched with this motivation. We expect our B.S. graduates to get involved in application-directed basic research, creating breakthrough technologies for new age industries.”

Aligning with the National Education Policy 2020, the interdisciplinary approach of these programs, the Institute aspires to cross the barrier of traditional paths and excel at the interplay of science and technology. The flexibility of opting for different specializations to meet societal and industrial needs and ever-growing sustainability demands is among the key features of this program’s curriculum.

Bachelor of Science in Chemistry

The Bachelor of Science in Chemistry program has been developed in line with the current trends aiming for science-based engineering innovation. This program is well-designed for the graduating students, with ample application opportunities in diverse areas, including Pharmaceuticals, Agrochemicals, Materials and devices, Energy, Healthcare and Environment.

Key features of B.S. in Chemistry program include:

  • Emphasis on industry relevant sustainable innovations
  • Opportunity to get Department specific specialization in Spectroscopy & Dynamics, and Organic & Organometallic Catalysis
  • Interdisciplinary specialization in Advanced Energy Materials

Highlighting the key features of the four-year B.S. program in Chemistry with specialization, Prof. Ramesh Metre, Head of the Department, said, “This four-year engineering-linked B.S. program in chemistry offers a thorough fundamental and applied knowledge in the field of chemical science including specialized and interdisciplinary areas. Students are encouraged to take full advantage of the scientific opportunities available in the department by working on original cutting-edge research projects.”

Bachelor of Science in Physics

The Bachelor of Science in Physics program started by IIT Jodhpur aims to impart theoretical foundations and practical skills in fundamental and applied physics with the understanding of interdisciplinary subjects through theory, computation and hands-on training. The graduates of this program will have career opportunities in diverse areas, including Green Energy and Sustainable Energy Materials, Photonics and Terahertz Technology/Communications, Quantum Technology and Communications, Quantum Open Systems, Flexible Electronics, Multifunctional Materials and Devices, Smart Energy for smart cities and Smart Healthcare.

Highlighting the key features of the B.S. program in Physics, Prof Ashutosh Alok, Head of the Department, said, “The program aims to impart foundations of fundamental as well as applied concepts of physics, enabling one to excel in physics-driven technologies. They will get an opportunity to work on projects with faculties with diverse expertise and access to the department’s modern labs and research facilities. The program envisages that students will understand the interdisciplinary approach to solve real-world problems and excel in different career paths such as researchers and innovators in academics or industry.”.

Key features of B.S. in Physics program include:

  • Flexibility for pursuing capability-linked specializations in various domains viz. Advanced Energy Materials, Photonics and Quantum Technologies
  • Integration of Engineering Design aspects into the curriculum
  • Opportunity to gain industrial experience through industry collaborations

IIT Jodhpur will also provide the B.S. program students with an opportunity to convert their 4-year B.S. program to 5 year B.S. – M.Tech dual degree program with respective specializations. In addition, the program offers to pursue an entrepreneurial path leading to science-based engineering innovations.
