Candidates shortlisted for test in any of the following Departments:
Biological Sciences/Chemistry/Mathematics/Physics will have to write two tests. Test-I will be common to all disciplines and Test-II will be discipline specific.
The details of the tests are as follows:
Test-I question paper consists of 30 multiple-choice type questions pertaining to General Science, Quantitative Reasoning & Analysis and Research Aptitude. The duration of Test – I will be 1 hr. Each correct answer will be awarded two marks. 0.5 marks will be deducted for every wrong answer.
Test-II will be subject-based and will consist of 70 multiple-choice type questions covering the prescribed syllabus of relevance to the candidate as given on Page 7.
The duration of Test – II will be 1 or 2 hrs. Each correct answer will be awarded two marks. 0.5 marks will be deducted for every wrong answer.
Candidates with M.Phil. / M.E. / M.Tech. or with National level fellowships like CSIR NET-JRF, DBT-JRF, UGC NET-JRF etc. are exempted from taking the above test.

Full-time PhD students admitted into the PhD Program are eligible to be considered for an Institute fellowship of Rs. 28,000 or Rs. 31,000 per month in the first year based on their qualifications at the time of admission.
Students admitted with M.E./M.Tech./M.Pharm./MBA/M.Phil. or an equivalent Degree are eligible to receive an Institute fellowship of Rs. 31,000/-.
Students admitted with M.Sc./B.E./B.Pharm. or an equivalent degree are eligible to receive an Institute fellowship of Rs. 28,000/-. These students on successful completion of coursework will receive Rs. 31,000/- from the Semester following the one in which the course work was completed.

Master’s degree in Engineering/Technology in a relevant area with a minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 6.0 or 60% of marks or first class. OR

The syllabus coverage will be 50% on Research Methodology and 50% on the specific subject.
The duration of the test is two hours and consists of objective-type questions.
The maximum marks for the online test is 140 (70 for Research Methodology and 70 for the specific subject), and an interview will be conducted for 60 marks. The candidates who secure 50% marks in the online test are only eligible for attending the interview. However, a relaxation of 5% marks (from 50% to 45%) shall be allowed for the candidates belonging to SC/ST/ OBC (Non-creamy layer) /Differently-abled category.

A candidate should score a minimum 6.5 CGPA or 60% marks or 1st class throughout career to be eligible for admission to PhD program. The Departmental Research Committee (DRC), however, may make exceptions (marks < 60% or CGPA < 6.5) at its discretion in only one among the results of 10th, +2, BA, BSc, BCom, Diploma etc. (except qualifying degree) if the candidate has qualified in GATE/NET/GPAT or other national level fellowship tests like DST-INSPIRE, etc. or joined as JRF/SRF in any research project.
For admission to Engineering and Science disciplines (except Life Science), a candidate should have passed Mathematics in +2 Science or Diploma.
Science students admitted to PhD programs in Engineering/Physics/ Mathematics must have passed Mathematics at +3 level. Students without Mathematics at +3 level may be admitted under the condition that they will have to register for 14 credits of 1000 and 2000 level Mathematics and 1000 level Computer Science courses (Theory and Practical) in addition to their normal course requirement, and secure at least C grade in each course.
A student should have passed Life Science or Biological Science either at +2 or +3 level for admission to PhD in Life Science department.
